Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs is a Department of Education initiative that assists students from low income backgrounds in preparing for college.
Central Michigan's GEAR UP program collaborates with Flint Consolidated Schools to offer workshops, campus field trips, and scholarships to young learners (grades 7 through 10) from five schools in the Flint, Michigan area.
Directed by a member of DWB as part of a new "Within Borders" initiative, twenty-one students from Central Michigan University's Senior Graphic Design Capstone Studio developed materials for CMU's GEAR UP program. Given the economic state of the Flint metropolitan area, and the numerous demands of running a complex, multi-campus project, there often are few resources left to promote the program. CMU Art Department students developed a number of materials aimed at donors, students, and their parents in an effort to reconceive CMU's GEAR UP program.
